There’s a lot to love about Syracuse

The first Europeans who arrived in the Syracuse area were French missionaries in the 17th century. The Onondaga Nation invited a group of Jesuit priests, soldiers, and traders to set up a mission along Onondaga Lake.

After the American Revolution, the area became settled by people from eastern New York as well as New England. Salt from the salt springs near Onondaga Lake became the area’s first major industry, giving Syracuse the nickname The Salt City. Manufacturing took root in the 19th century, and World War II helped expand that with several war-related industries. Post-war, General Motors, Chrysler, Carrier and General Electric all had major facilities in the area.
Syracuse University is a major part of the Greater Syracuse community and is known for its outstanding communications department and its Division I sports teams. Notable SU alumni include President Joe Biden, New York Governor Kathy Hochul, Oscar- and Emmy-winning screenwriter Aaron Sorkin, sportscaster Bob Costas, actress and singer Vanessa Williams, author Joyce Carol Oates, space shuttle pilot and commander Eileen Collins, Columbo star Peter Falk, legendary running back Jim Brown, fashion designer Betsy Johnson, journalist Dorothy Thompson, interior designer and Queer Eye for the Straight Guy star Thom Filicia and American Bandstand host Dick Clark.

There’s always something to do in Syracuse, whether it’s St. Patrick’s Day on Tipperary Hill (the location of the country’s only traffic light where the green light is on top), the annual Mountain Goat Road Race, a play at Syracuse Stage, a Syracuse Mets baseball game or taking the kids to the Museum of Science and Technology.

The food scene in Syracuse is one of a kind with the original Dinosaur Bar-B-Que, salt potatoes, Heid’s hot dogs, Gianelli sausages, half-moon cookies, chicken riggies, the massive sandwiches at Brooklyn Pickle, Pastabilities’ spicy hot tomato oil, Columbus Bakery bread and New York State Fair staples like wine slushies, spiedies and Cornell chicken.
Notable Syracuse natives and residents include:
